The Greeks originally named quartz, "Krystallos", the word for ice, but this soon applied to any crystal. The most frequently occurring mineral on Earth, quartz is found in nearly every environment and is a component of almost every rock type. Occurring in virtually every color imaginable, quartz has many varieties that include amethyst, citrine, rock crystal, smoky quartz, tigers eye, and crypto-crystalline types such as jasper, onyx, bloodstone and more.
